We had another fun and rewarding experience volunteering for this year’s Ohio Mock Trial! District competition was held on January 20th of this year, and these were the Regional trials held on February 10. We arrived around 11:00 a.m. and went through the security line at the Old Courthouse in Cleveland, Ohio. I was greeted by Jessica Paine. Jessica was smiling, energetic and organized as usual. As an employee of the CMBA, she never fails to impress, accomplishing every task with an unfailing can-do attitude, contagious to everyone who has the privilege of working with her. I’m not sure who else could organize and keep over 200 high-schoolers, plus staff and parents happy in such a way. I was assigned to check in all of our volunteers. It was a wonderful job as I got to see old associates and meet some new ones. (This is a shout-out to you, Judge Markus!) Our volunteers were given a delicious lunch and went to their assigned courtrooms.
The staff that assists each team helps them hone their skills – communication, analytical and courtroom are just a few of the skills that these students have the opportunity to showcase and improve. All of the school teams (listed below) came prepared for a courtroom battle. All of the team members were prepared in every way – from their professional outfits to their opening and closing arguments – every team should be proud of the way they handled their assignments. Unfortunately, we couldn’t choose all of them to move on to the next round of competition in Columbus, but all of the scoring was close and choosing winners was difficult! We wish all teams success in their regional competition in Columbus, we know that they will make the Cleveland legal community proud!
The Ohio Mock Trial program is conducted under the auspices of the Ohio Center for Law Related Education (OCLRE), sponsored by the Supreme Court of Ohio, the Ohio State Bar Association, Attorney General’s Office and ACLU Foundation of Ohio.
I had the privilege of taking some photographs of the students and competition. Click here to check them out in the CMBA photo album!
Thank you so much to all the attorneys and judges below who volunteered their time and energy:
